Trace elements are minerals, which are present in our body in small amounts only, but perform diverse tasks and functions. They contribute to over 5000 metabolism processes in our organism. We discriminate between essential (vital to human life) and non-essential trace elements.
Essential trace elements, which our body cannot produce on its own and which have to be provided by nutrition include, amongst others, ferric, zinc, selenium, iodine, copper, manganese, chrome, and molybdenum. Zinc
The trace element zinc plays a key role in an incredible plethora of metabolism reactions: It contributes to the function of approximately 300 enzymes of the cellular metabolism and contained within 50 enzymes. Zinc is important for growth, skin, insulin storage, and protein synthesis, the production of sperms and the immune system. Zinc is an essential trace element and indispensable for many processes in our body.
A sufficient supply of zinc is also very important during the growth period, as children and adolescents—a lack of zinc can lead to unpleasant delays in growth and development. Zinc is required for mitosis. Thus, it is an important trace element for skin and connective tissue and in this regard, amongst others, important for wound healing after injuries or a surgery.
Also our immune system and the defense cells of our body require zinc; a high zinc intake supports our natural defense forces. Besides a corresponding natural antiviral effect, zinc inter alia supports the development of a normal structure of the mucous membranes, so that the attachment and invasion of viruses and other attackers to our immune system is impeded. Furthermore, zinc has an antioxidative effect and thus counters free radicals.

Manganese
Manganese is an essential trace element and must be supplied to the body regularly. Manganese is mostly found in the bones. Furthermore, the liver, the pancreas, and the kidneys show a high amount of manganese. The trace element is resorbed and recovered in the small intestine. Manganese is part of proteins (enzymes) and thus participates in many important functions in the body.

Copper
The trace element copper is required for the production of the dyes of our body, the so-called pigments, and the red blood cells. The red blood cells are responsible for the absorption of oxygen from breathing air and the distribution of the oxygen in the body, including the supply of all cells. The oxygen is thereby tied to the central anion ferric, which is contained in the red blood pigment (hemoglobin). Only with a sufficient amount of oxygen, the cells in the body can fulfil their tasks, so that all processes in the body run smoothly. In this regard, copper contributes to a normal transport of ferric in the body.
Furthermore, copper supports the natural defense system of our body, the so-called immune system. Thereby, copper eventually contributes to the defense of malicious substances and pathogens, like bacteria. Additionally, copper contributes to building bones, skin, and hair and to natural wound healing. Copper furthermore allows the body the production of neurons for the nervous system.

Ferric
Ferric is another essential trace element, which cannot be produced by the body and must therefore be supplied by nutrition. In the organism, it is present in the red blood pigment (hemoglobin), in the protein of the muscles, and in numerous enzymes. In the red blood cells, it transports the oxygen; furthermore, the metallic element plays a role in energy generation and the synthesis of many important substances. Ferric is primarily active in processes involving oxygen: It is required for oxidation processes and hence for the energy generation in the cells and the cellular respiration, it is responsible for oxygen storage in the myoglobin, the red muscular pigment and—tied to hemoglobin, the blood pigment of the red blood cells—for the transfer of the oxygen in the blood to the cells. Additionally, ferric contributes to the synthesis of various enzymes.

Iodine

Only if there is a sufficient level of thyroid hormones, the metabolism can work properly and ensure a normal growth and a healthy development. The thyroid hormones are actually a basic requirement for an optimum mitosis and cell growth. They also regulate the energy demand of the single cells and the organism as a whole. These hormones also influence mental development and even the mental state. Finally, they contribute to keeping the metabolism processes of the body, like muscular activity, body temperature regulation, and oxygen consumption going.

Chromium
Chromium is a trace element, which is suspected to activate various proteins in the human body, which primarily ensure the metabolism of so-called macro nutrients. Macro nutrients are proteins, fats (lipids), and carbohydrates. They in turn are the main components of our nutrition and the foundation, of which our body consists (besides water).
Chromium activates certain proteins, which care as enzymes or hormones for the decomposition respectively the utilization of these macro nutrients in our body. Noteworthy is chromium’s role in the carbohydrate metabolism, because chromium plays a role in the synthesis of insulin. The hormone insulin actually prevents the blood glucose levels from rising too high and thereby ensures a normal blood glucose level. But chromium is also said to have an influencing effect on the maintenance of a normal metabolism of fats, which is particularly relevant to persons, who perform weight reduction measures.

In our body, selenium has a function similar to vitamin E: It is part of an enzyme, which binds free radicals, which in turn result from the damage to fatty acids inflicted by oxygen. Furthermore, selenium contributes to the synthesis of thyroid hormones. But for men, a sufficient supply of selenium is particularly relevant, because selenium plays an important role in sperm generation.

Molybdenum
Molybdenum, although not very common by its name to most of us, is a vital trace element, not only to humans. It is essential to almost all living organisms, because it is an integral part of numerous enzymes. Amongst other things, it contributes to the metabolism—and therefore to decomposition—of sulphuric amino acids and to the generation of uric acid.
Molybdenum is required by humans primarily for the metabolism of sulphuric amino acids. This regard to health has been confirmed and stated bindingly by the European Commission some time ago.
As our bones and teeth also contain Molybdenum in crystalline form, molybdenum as trace element is suspected to also have a positive effect on our bone and dental health. Relevant scientific research is still in progress and not completed yet.
